Monaro Bauxite

Project Details

Located in Monaro Volcan Province, near Cooma, in southern New South Wales, the project has tenement access to 1,182 units and covers an area of 3,500km2. It is believed that the area is host to widespread occurrences of bauxite. These bauxite occurrences appear to be associated with gibbsite-altered basalts and are expected to be rich in alumina content and low in silica grades.

Previous Exploration & Mining

A number of deposits with bauxite occurrences have been identified in this region. In 1992, a borehole was drilled by the Bureau of Mineral Resources. The hole encountered approximately 198.2m of mafic and variably weathered Volcan rocks overlying 8.5m of lacustrine sedimentary and hyaloclastite deposits, and 9.0m of weathered basement composed of schist and meta-sandstone.Within the borehole, seven weathering profiles, up to 12.5m thick with bauxite zones up to 3.5m thick were encountered, with bauxite comprising ~9% of the sequence.

Resource Potential within ELA 3595

The resource potential for Monaro Volcan province is yet to be assessed to the JORC standard. However according to the Taylor and Roach report (2003), Monaro basaltic pile is 197m thick and is made up of about 22 individual basalt lava flows. Of the 22 reported flows, seven are topped by weathering profiles up to 12.5m thick, including bauxite caps up to 3.5m thick.

Volcan’s Exploration

The company is using a variety of remotesensing tools to identify potential areas. Similar to Inverell project, the use of geo-formational model is made to identify the prospective drilling areas. Till now, the company has identified 25 specific volcanic centers associated with prospective bauxite deposits. The company aims to identity multiple deposit targets in this area, each capable of hosting a JORC-compliant Inferred bauxite resource in excess of 100mt.
